The Soul Session – TWO

Love makes the world go around. “two”, the second album by The Soul Session, is full of love. Ralph Kiefer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and producer from South Germany embarks on a stylistically diverse journey into Soul, Jazz, Funk and World Music.

Being a highly respected session musician in the jazz as well as the crossover scene, Kiefer made a serious impact in 2011 with “one”, the first Soul Session album. “one” was built on a solid backbeat of Soul, Hip Hop and Funk, while “two” now takes a step further into a spiritual and eclectic dimension. “Quantraversa” featuring the voice of L.A. neo-soul queen Georgia Anne Muldrow is the mind-blowing opener of this album, a truly deep and intense rhythmic statement.

Quantraversa is a word which you will not find in any dictionary, but that is not the point, says Ralph Kiefer. “This album is a journey to the inner self. The recording process was like meditation. I often started with a loop, or an idea for a melody. It evolved from there and I simply let it happen. When I involved the lyricists and vocalists, my drafts sometimes took a completely different paths and ended in something unexpected and beautifully new.”

Space Captain – Sycamore

“Sycamore” tells a lyrical, folk-flavoured tale of complicated love, the lilting voice of singer and songwriter Maralisa Simmons-Cook melding with heavily effected guitars and synths alongside live and digital beats and brass flourishes.

“The story is based on a tumultuous love triangle my dad was thrown into post-college”, she explains; “He told me this story one summer, behind a bar in Brooklyn called Sycamore. It’s a tale of love and betrayal, about trying to win back a lover, and the issues that arose between three best friends”.

“Sycamore” brings an eagerly awaited taste of new music from Space Captain and an upfront glimpse of their first full ‘All Flowers In Time’ album dropping October 27th.

The Do Yo Thang – Those Days

The Do Yo Thangs are back with Those Days, another slice of minty fresh R&B with a twist. A Darker, more electronic musical direction sees the band take their staple of 808 kick drums and tight vocal harmonies into almost Little Dragonesque territories with frenetic drum programming, growling synthesizers and fuzz bass.

The sentimental songwriting and soulful vocals are classic Do Yo Thangs, from Audrey Powne’s sensual lead track to the richly harmonised and layered ensemble vocals supporting her. This song is the Do Yo’s longing for the freedoms of youth in a world of stress, responsibility and pressure. Adulting is hard – even for musicians apparently.
