The Soul Session – TWO

Love makes the world go around. β€œtwo”, the second album by The Soul Session, is full of love. Ralph Kiefer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and producer from South Germany embarks on a stylistically diverse journey into Soul, Jazz, Funk and World Music.

Being a highly respected session musician in the jazz as well as the crossover scene, Kiefer made a serious impact in 2011 with β€œone”, the first Soul Session album. β€œone” was built on a solid backbeat of Soul, Hip Hop and Funk, while β€œtwo” now takes a step further into a spiritual and eclectic dimension. β€œQuantraversa” featuring the voice of L.A. neo-soul queen Georgia Anne Muldrow is the mind-blowing opener of this album, a truly deep and intense rhythmic statement.

Quantraversa is a word which you will not find in any dictionary, but that is not the point, says Ralph Kiefer. β€œThis album is a journey to the inner self. The recording process was like meditation. I often started with a loop, or an idea for a melody. It evolved from there and I simply let it happen. When I involved the lyricists and vocalists, my drafts sometimes took a completely different paths and ended in something unexpected and beautifully new.”

Space Captain – Sycamore

β€œSycamore” tells a lyrical, folk-flavoured tale of complicated love, the lilting voice of singer and songwriter Maralisa Simmons-Cook melding with heavily effected guitars and synths alongside live and digital beats and brass flourishes.

β€œThe story is based on a tumultuous love triangle my dad was thrown into post-college”, she explains; β€œHe told me this story one summer, behind a bar in Brooklyn called Sycamore. It’s a tale of love and betrayal, about trying to win back a lover, and the issues that arose between three best friends”.

β€œSycamore” brings an eagerly awaited taste of new music from Space Captain and an upfront glimpse of their first full ‘All Flowers In Time’ album dropping October 27th.

Sudan Archives – Come Meh Way

EXCELLENT artist Sudan Archives is back with Come Meh Way :

Violinist and vocalist, Sudan Archives writes, plays, and produces her own music. Drawing inspiration from Sudanese fiddlers, she is self-taught on the violin, and her unique songs also fold in elements of R&B, and experimental electronic music.

Sudan Archives grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she “messed around with instruments in the house” and took up violin in the fourth grade, eventually teaching herself how to play the instrument by ear. When she discovered the violin playing style of Northeast Africa, her eyes opened to the possibilities of the instrument. “The way they played it was different from classical music. I resonated with the style, and I was like, ‘Maybe I can use this style with electronic music,'” she says.

This fusing of folk music and electronic production was the turning point for Sudan. “I started mixing my violin into beats,” she says, β€œIt wasn’t complicated β€” I’d just sing straight into the iPad.” She honed her at-home style after moving to Los Angeles aged 19 to study music technology, and after a chance encounter at a Low End Theory party with Stones Throw A&R and Leaving Records owner Matthewdavid, she signed with Stones Throw. At the very start of her musical career, she’s already won plaudits from the likes of the New York Times and Pitchfork, and played live at experimental festival Moogfest.
